What Local SEO Costs in Ann Arbor

Nobody publishes real numbers for this, so here is the honest version: what drives the price up, what drives it down, and when you should not spend it at all.

What does local SEO actually cost in Ann Arbor?

Every agency site avoids this question, which is why everybody asks it first. We cannot publish a fixed price, because the work genuinely varies. What we can do is explain what moves it.

The short answer

Local SEO for a small Washtenaw County service business is a monthly engagement, and the sensible way to think about it is against your profit per job rather than as a marketing line item. If two or three additional jobs a month would comfortably cover the cost, the maths works. If it would take ten, it probably does not, and we would tell you so.

We quote after an audit, because quoting before it means quoting a package.

What pushes the price up

Competitive density. The number of established competitors in your category and towns is the single largest factor. Ranking in a category with four well-reviewed incumbents inside a mile takes considerably more prominence work than ranking in a thin category. This is why the same service costs differently in Novi and in Chelsea.

Scope. A business with three services needs fewer pages than one with fifteen. Page count drives content cost more than anything else.

Starting condition. A profile that has never been optimised and a site with no structure means more work in the first quarter. Conversely, a business that already has strong reviews and a working site starts further along.

Cleanup debt. Duplicate listings, a previous agency’s low-quality links, or a site migration that lost rankings all add remedial work before progress starts.

What brings it down

A narrower service area. Fewer services to build pages for. An existing site that can be edited rather than replaced. A healthy review profile already in place. And a willingness to do parts of the work yourself — several clients handle photos, review requests and posting internally, which meaningfully reduces the monthly scope.

What the money is actually buying

In the first quarter, mostly correction: profile categories and services, listing cleanup, and the site structure needed for pages to rank.

After that it becomes prominence, which is where the ongoing cost sits — reviews, content and local links, month after month, because that is the only part that extends reach and the only part that compounds.

What it does not buy

It does not buy rankings. Google states on its own guidance that local rankings cannot be purchased, and that applies to agency retainers as much as to advertising.

It does not buy a guaranteed number of leads. Anyone quoting a monthly lead figure is either buying shared leads or making it up.

And it does not buy speed. If you need calls this month, that is paid campaigns for Ann Arbor businesses, and it is a different budget with different economics.

When we would tell you not to spend it

If you are already booked to capacity, more visibility produces enquiries you decline and occasional bad reviews from people you could not fit in.

If your profit per job is small enough that the retainer needs a large volume increase to break even, the risk is poor even when the work succeeds.

If your category has almost no local search demand, no amount of optimisation creates it.

And if you cannot sustain the spend for at least six months, starting is worse than not starting, because you will stop shortly before the compounding begins.

In any of those cases the better advice is usually to fix the profile yourself, ask every customer for a review, and revisit this in a year.

The one honest cost comparison

The useful comparison is not agency versus agency. It is agency versus your own time.

Most of the first-quarter work is achievable by an owner with a few focused hours: correcting categories and services, listing every service properly, cleaning up duplicate listings, setting up a review habit. If you will genuinely do it, do it — and start with the audit rather than a retainer.

What almost nobody sustains is the second and third quarter, when the visible wins are gone and the remaining work is slow. That is what a retainer is really buying.

Straight answers

Questions we get asked most

Why will nobody give me a price for local SEO?

Because the work varies enormously with competition and scope, and because a fixed price would mean either overcharging simple engagements or losing money on hard ones. A firm that quotes before seeing your market is quoting a package rather than the work. It is still reasonable to expect a range after one conversation.

Is cheap local SEO ever worth it?

Very cheap monthly retainers usually buy automated reports, bulk directory submissions and occasional profile posts. None of that moves a competitive market, and some of it creates cleanup work later. If a budget only stretches that far, doing the profile work yourself is a better use of the money.

Should I pay per lead instead of monthly?

Pay-per-lead sounds safer and usually is not, because it creates an incentive to deliver lead volume rather than lead quality, and shared leads go to your competitors at the same time. Local SEO also builds an asset you keep, which a per-lead arrangement does not.

How long before local SEO pays for itself?

Divide the monthly cost by your average profit per job. If two extra jobs a month cover it, the maths works quickly once results arrive, and results generally take three to six months. If it would take ten extra jobs to break even, the honest answer is that the budget belongs somewhere else.
