Service verify
Advertising is the only channel in local marketing that responds on your timetable. A campaign built on Monday can be producing calls on Tuesday, which is worth a great deal to a business that needs work now rather than in six months.
It is also the channel where money disappears fastest, because the feedback loop feels productive while the account quietly funds clicks from people who were never going to hire anyone.
The work is mostly subtractive
The biggest lever in a local search account is not the bidding strategy. It is what you refuse to pay for.
Search term reports are where this happens. Reading them weekly and adding negatives removes the job seekers, the students researching, the DIY searchers, the people in cities you do not serve, and the near-miss terms that share your words and none of your intent. A well-run local account typically has a longer negative list than a positive one, and it grows for months before it settles.
Match types matter for the same reason. Broad match with a weak negative list is the most reliable way to spend a local budget on nothing.
Geography is harder here than it looks
Radius targeting is the default and it is a poor fit for Washtenaw County.
Drive time and map distance diverge along the corridors around Ann Arbor, so a radius drawn around a business includes places nobody would drive to and excludes places they would. On home football Saturdays parts of the network effectively close, changing the practical service area for hours.
We target by locality rather than radius wherever the platform allows it, exclude the places you would decline work from, and check the location reports for spend leaking into areas you never intended to serve. That last check regularly finds waste in accounts that have been running for years.
Dayparting, because an unanswered call is a wasted click
A click that produces a call nobody answers has cost you the full price and delivered nothing. For a small team this is a substantial share of a budget.
Running ads when the phone is genuinely answered — and either pausing outside those hours or switching to a form-led message — is one of the least glamorous improvements available and one of the most reliable. It matters more for trades where the customer is calling three businesses in the same ten minutes.
Conversion tracking comes before spending
We will not run a campaign we cannot measure. If calls are untracked and form submissions are not recorded, the platform optimises toward clicks, which is optimising toward the wrong thing with your money.
That is not a philosophical position — automated bidding is only as good as the conversion signal it receives, and a poor signal produces expensive confidence. Where tracking is missing, it gets fixed first, which is analytics and conversion tracking work.
Landing pages, not the homepage
Sending expensive clicks to a homepage is one of the more common habits in local advertising and one of the easiest to fix.
A page that matches the advert, answers the specific question and asks for the call will outperform a general homepage by a wide margin, and the difference shows within days rather than months. Where that page does not exist, building it is landing page work.
How this should relate to organic work
Ads and SEO are usually sold as alternatives. They work better in sequence.
Advertising produces something more valuable than leads: verified data about which queries convert for your business, in your market, at what cost. Terms that produce customers at a good cost per lead deserve organic pages built to rank for them. Terms that produce nothing after enough clicks to be certain should not get a page at all.
Done that way, the ad budget funds the discovery and the organic work gradually captures the same demand more cheaply. Businesses that never make the transition pay retail for every lead indefinitely.
